If you or a loved one has been charged with suspected manslaughter, you need to take legal action fast. When the stakes are this high, choose a legal team you can trust.

What is manslaughter?

In cases involving the involuntary death of another individual as a result of reckless behavior, criminal negligence, or outright irresponsibility, an individual can be charged with involuntary manslaughter. If an individual was intentionally killed during an altercation or an act of passion, and there was no premeditation involved, the charges will likely be voluntary manslaughter. Vehicular manslaughter charges involve the death of an individual in a motor vehicle accident, most often as a result DUI or some other type of driver distraction.

Manslaughter is a second degree felony in Florida and if the victim was a child or elderly person by means of culpable negligence, the charge can be upgraded to a first degree felony of aggravated manslaughter.

Penalties for manslaughter in Florida can include:

  • A minimum of 9 years in prison and up to 15 years
  • Up to 30 years of prison for aggravated manslaughter
  • Fines up to $10,000
  • 15 years of probation

It may be possible to argue that force by way of self-defense was necessary in your case or you may have committed homicide entirely by accident in a voluntary manslaughter case. Regardless, you need a strong defense on your side as soon as possible.
